Water & Sanitation

The links between a lack of water and sanitation access and development goals are clear, and the solutions to the problem are cost-effective. The purpose of these activities is to establish a water management system for the Lebrun Community Center being built by HavServe Volunteer Service Network in Haiti.  Access to clean water is the main concern in Haiti, where waterborne illnesses, such as typhoid, cholera, and chronic diarrhea, are the cause of more than half of the deaths in the country every year.

The area of Lebrun has a rare abundance of safe-drinking spring water that can also be used for gardening, toilets, cooking, and various other activities.  Presently, much of it is being lost due to lack of management and education. Therefore, volunteers will work with the HavServe water management team on containing unused water in reservoirs, managing, and using the water at the new community center and the school garden.
